| Yes, I made a promise to myself on my 21st birthday that I would make it to the African continent before I turned 50. I am proud to say that I honored that vow, albeit with just four days to spare. As the trip loomed, I began to worry that the anticipation would pale in comparison to the reality, but I was wrong. In fact, the reality eclipsed my wildest dreams, and the photograph above shows the sheer happiness that accompanied my first steps (and all subsequent steps) in Africa. To say the trip was life-changing is a gross understatement. For starters, I quit my job within a year of returning. The South African men, women, and children made me realize, by virtue of their cadence, warmth and humility, that there is more I want to do with my life; my self-imposed liberation gave me the autonomy I craved. So, I thank those who have supported me throughout this endeavor, and I thank you for making it to my site. If you are interested in helping education become a reasonable, global expectation, please click on the donate button above, or email me at MTCummings@aol.com. In the meantime, as the Africans say, "Go well." |
